Happy Foursquare Day, San Diego!

The world’s first social media holiday is being celebrated today. Foursquare Day, which is 4/16 (get it? Four, squared?), is the brainchild of a Tampa optometrist who loves the social location-based check-in game Foursquare and thought it should have its own day. Though initiated less than a month ago, the idea spread worldwide and is being celebrated with check-in specials at various businesses and even a unique #4sqDay 2010 badge (pictured at right).

Several restaurants, bars and other businesses in San Diego offer discounts and deals for those who check in to Foursquare on their premises, and some have added special deals just for Foursquare Day.

NBC 7/39 celebrated Foursquare Day on their morning newscast by having Jenn Van Grove interview Dennis Crowley, co-founder of Foursquare, via Skype.

If you haven’t tried Foursquare yet, today would be a good day to give it a go. The likelihood is high that you could unlock the rare and coveted Swarm badge, which is given to folks who check in at a venue where at least 50 people have checked in at once. This badge has only been unlocked in San Diego twice before. If you’d like to get it, congregate at the Red Zone Sports Bar & Grill at 1100 Fifth Avenue at 7PM. Besides the possibility of a Swarm badge, Red Zone is also offering 10% off your bill if you show them your check-in. Padre fans are also hoping for a Swarm badge at today’s Padres vs. Diamondbacks game at Petco Park, where the first 25,000 attendees will also get magnet schedules.

If you’d like to get the #4sqDay 2010 badge, all you have to do is check in to any venue and add the shout “Happy @foursquare Day!” (Note to newbies: Before you start yelling that out loud, know that a “shout” is a text message you can include in your check-in.)

See you on Foursquare!
