Comic Con Geeks vs. Padres Fans: Wed, July 22nd 2009

I know it’s been a while since my last post, but I’m back from out of town travel with a broken arm and more posts to write; so here we go! When last we together, dear readers, we looked at how pop-culture fervor intermittently brought down the Comic Con hotel reservation system. This time I’d like to warn against a different threat to your perfect Con experience – Padres Fans…

picture-1For those of us with the coveted Four Day pass, preview night will bring all kinds of joy. According to the Comic-Con site, the 4 Day Pass is long sold out, which means that there will more than likely be a nice crowd on Wednesday night.

Nothing makes aficionados of preview night happier than spending a few hours on the show floor, loading up with swag and rare collectibles, and marching wearily out of the convention center like zombies towards the nearest source of food.

In any year, it can be difficult to find food during the rush that follows the closing of the exhibit halls each night, but this year geeks will want to be especially prepared on Preview Night. Why? The Padres will be playing a home game against Florida, the last in a three game series that night.

Padres Schedule JulySo, not only will finding food be difficult, anticipate having no parking, and possibly a ton of traffic on roads, trolleys, and sidewalks as fans of both the con and the Padres vie for resources starting around 5pm. Doors for open for preview night open at 6pm, and the game starts at 7:05pm, but from personal experience preview night waiting will begin sometime after lunch. Waiting in line is a tradition of my people, and nobody is more prepared to wait than a determined fanboy (or fangirl).

So what to do? I suggest making dinner reservations as soon as possible through sites like OpenTable, or if you’ve got your heart set on visiting that delicious old standby recently revived in San Diego, The Old Spaghetti Factory, I suggest subscribing to the live Padres TXT Feed on your mobile. This way you can occasionally check the current score and beat sports fans out of PetCo Park before the game ends (or it becomes a blow out before the 7th inning…)

Edit: I mentioned The Old Spaghetti Factory, but my personal post con dinner stop has traditionally been Royal Thai on 5th.  If you have a favorite, please drop a line in the comments!

Good news because of the rain out in Philadelphia the Padres will be traveling Wednesday so they moved the Preview Night game to an afternoon game. They will be playing 3 games in 3 days in 3 different states.
