SDTweetup returns with sneak peek screening of Catfish

Many San Diego folks active in social media remember SDTweetup with some affection. It was among the first local real-life gatherings of folks who had met online, specifically on Twitter. The last official SDTweetup happened a year ago at Halloween. I don’t know about you, but I missed it.

Hurrah! A new SDTweetup has been scheduled, and there is dancing in the streets! But to get in on this one, you will have to be quick.

What: SDTweetup at the Movies – Catfish Advanced Screening
Where: AMC Theatres La Jolla 12
When: Wednesday, September 15, 6:00 PM
Who: The first 75 people who RSVP at Eventbrite.com will get an “admit 2” ticket

Check out the Catfish trailer. This will fill up fast, so please RSVP as soon as possible or risk sadface.

Why is this SDTweetup so special? Well, besides being the first one in about a year, it is also the last SDTweetup that will be organized by its creator, Jenn Van Grove (@jbruin). Jenn has done great things in the tech space in the last few years, like joining Mashable as an associate editor and becoming a TV tech correspondent for NBC San Diego. Now she is taking her talents to San Francisco and has bequeathed the SDTweetup event to your humble reporter (AKA me, Peggy Gartin, @thepegisin on Twitter).

Hope you can join us this Wednesday! And if you have ideas for future SDTweetups, please let me know at @thepegisin, thepegisin@cox.net, or http://www.meetup.com/sdtweetup.

At what point does a new industry need an awards event to unite its movers and shakers and celebrate their achievements? In the case of new media in San Diego, the answer is clearly right now!

#influenceSD, cofounded by locals Matt Browne and Melani Gordon, basically fills a gaping void in the local social media community.

With more than 3,000 votes cast online for over 315 nominees, it also seems to me like there’s been a pent up demand–has me kinda wondering, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
