Barcamp San Diego wifi post mortem!

After running 7 barcamp networks (2 in LA, 5 in SD) I’ve learned a ton:

  • ‘end user’ or ‘home’ wifi gear doesnt work. No matter how awesome you think it is. It just never ever cuts it.
  • 2.4ghz is the devil
  • you need at LEAST 5-10 megabits of connectivity, preferably with the ability to burst up higher.
  • OpenDNS = fail
  • Spend the extra money/time/etc and get mesh wireless from a reputable vendor (cisco/aruba/xirrus etc). It will make your life way way easier.

I’ve banged out a quick writeup on the BarCamp San Diego 5 wifi network over on thaumatocracy.com – so if you’re a wifidork or have any interest in how the network was run, pop on by!

A February SD Tweetup is Coming!

Do you tweet? Or uh… twitter? I’m still not 100% sure what the proper conjugation of “twitter” is, even though I use the damn thing. But if you do at least one of the above, then you should join us at this month’s Tweetup!

Jennifer Van Grove (or @jbruin on Twitter) is the head honcho who organizes these fun monthly-ish events around town.  Alas, I have only been to one SDTweet up a few months back at The Pearl Hotel on Rosecrans.

I’m not much of a joiner, I’ll admit. I’m not really a gung ho networker-type, either.  But when someone says “free drinks”, you can bet I’ll consider it.  Much to my delight, I found many people I already knew at the Tweetup, so I had a comfort zone and I met lots and lots of great new people, like fellow metroblogger (and fearless leader), Peg or @thepegisin.

I haven’t had the opportunity to attend a Tweetup since, though they are always someplace interesting, like the LaFayette Hotel in El Cajon Blvd. or the KPBS Studios.  But I’ll be attending the next one, along with a friend and a whole slew of others (130 and counting!), so I hope we’ll see you there.

Here’s the dish:

How to find us
“We’re taking over the place, but look for the Rock Band setup…”

Jennifer says…

We’re taking over Wine Cabana in Old Town (my favorite wine bar) for a Saturday night of socializing, singing, and of course tweeting. There will be the return of the Twitter wall, courtesy of @gebl, and even a Rock Band setup (thx @downtownrob) so those of us with Qik and video cams can capture you’re awesome drumming, singing, or guitar playing prowess to share with the Twitterverse.

Wine Cabana is graciously giving us the fantastic space and some free appetizers, as well as honoring happy hour prices all night for our group. Of course we do have a fabulous sponsor – Network Velocity, so there will be a hosted wine bar until supplies run out.

So put on your rockstar pants and come to the SD Tweetup!
