Celebrate San Diego Beer Week 2010 with SDTweetup and TapHunter!

Remember when we used to all get together every month or so for the SDTweetup? Well, SDTweetup is getting back into a groove. We had a very fun movie event in September with the advanced screening of Catfish, and now a new SDTweetup has been scheduled for November.

The time seemed right to introduce two somewhat overlapping groups to each other, formally. SDTweetuppers, meet SD Beer Week. Craft beer lovers in San Diego, how’d you like to come to an SDTweetup? In this spirit, we’ve joined up with Melani and Jeff “Flash” Gordon of TapHunter.com to create a unique event.

What: SDTweetup Celebrates SD Beer Week with TapHunter
Where: West Coast Tavern, 2895 University Ave., San Diego
When: Tuesday, November 9, 7:00 PM
Who: The first 250 people who RSVP here

We’ll have all the usual SDTweetup mayhem, giveaways, and usual suspects (who are probably some of your closest friends by now), along with a new injection of hops, malt, and beer culture. There will be tasty craft beer and food pairings from West Coast’s chef Peter Zakarian to satisfy your palate, and a TweetWall to post your juiciest OH’s and most random photos of the event. (Many thanks to Gabe Lawrence and tweetwalllive.com for this.)

You’ll also learn more about the over 300 events scheduled to happen during SD Beer Week, and have an opportunity to plot out your attending strategy with your Twitter friends.

Our sponsors will make coming worth your while, too. The generous folks at mophie will be giving away 10 mophie juice packs for keeping your iPhone or iPod Touch charged up all day. TapHunter is also planning to bring some special prizes. To enter to win, please win a business card of some sort–time to order those moo cards!–so we can draw yours to win.

Attendance is capped at 250, so RSVP today! If this is your first SDTweetup, get the most out of it by first reading these tips.

The San Diego beer scene grows yet further

People who enjoy beer and happen to live in San Diego have been getting a treat this week. It’s been “Storm Week” here – meaning the influence of Stone Brewing Co can be felt far and wide.

Churchills, an english pub in San Marcos recently opened up their new renovated bar area – which has 50 tap handles. FIFTY! They have a LOT of really good beer on tap. I’d been threatening Ivan, the owner, that I would be coming in with my camera to take a bunch of beer-porn shots of his new setup – and I finally delivered.

Follow @churchills on twitter for awesome updates, and if you’re bored – check out the rest of my pictures from churchills!

Early review: Station Tavern & Burgers

stationtavern

You’re probably familiar with other bars and restaurants run by Sam Chammas: Live Wire, Whistle Stop, the Turf Club (where “grill your own steak” was invented), and Riviera Supper Club (where it was perfected). So expectations for his latest venture, the long-awaited Station Tavern & Burgers, have  been high. We got a preview recently during the Station’s two-week soft opening, and it did not disappoint.

The Station really does resemble a train station – the back wall opens up to a long, diagonal outdoor space strewn with picnic tables and colored lights overhead that look like signal lamps. The place is exceptionally kid-friendly – the outside portion has soft, playground-grade pebbles underfoot and a wooden “trolley car” to play on. The vibe is reclaimed vintage, with rich panels of horizontal finished wood and what looks like a salvaged hand-painted cigar billboard serving as a back door. Menu graphics feature an old trolley map of South Park.

Celebrate Earth Day with organic beer!

Beer: Proof that the Earth loves us

Beer: Proof that the Earth loves us

Happy Earth Day! Did you make it to the big shindig in Balboa Park last weekend? Well, even if you didn’t, it’s not too late to celebrate – Earth Day is today!

As you may know, here at SD Metblogs we love the Blind Lady Ale House, and they are doing something special for Mother Earth today. Among the many fine brews they serve, there are about 7 that are organic. For every organic beer purchased today, BLAH will donate $1 to the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. How’s that for putting your money where your mouth is?

If you’re more tempted by fun or financial gain than doing good, then I should tell you they are also screening some old surf movies on a decidedly non-digital projector, and will be raffling off posters, gift cards, DVDs, and cases of beer.

Beer, prizes, and surf movies? Done. Meet you there!

Blind Lady giving away glasses

blindlady

Sound like the punchline to a tasteless joke? It’s not. Let me explain:

The Blind Lady Ale House, a recently-established purveyor of craft pizza and beer on Adams Avenue, just got in a shipment of beautiful, new, perfect-for-beer-snobs-ahem-I-mean-connoisseurs beer glasses. Hooray! However, they’ve been open for about a month, using their second choice in glassware. That means they now have about double the glasses they’d need day-to-day in their fine establishment.

So tonight they’re having “Not Quite a Pint Night,” in which they solve their storage problem by giving you one of their old glasses to take home when you order a beer. Heck, ask for a complete set. They must have dozens just waiting for a good home.

Drinkup: The San Diego chillout Meetup

Theres quite a handful of meetups in town. Blogger meetups, twitter meetups, web dev meetups, web standards meetups, marketing, advertising, CEOS only, martians, Al Pacino look alikes, clowns with ak-47s..

Okay I made those last few up, but there are roughly 10-12 meetups in town, each with their own agenda. The ones that seem to draw the largest crowds are generally held in places that don’t promote communication – loud thumping techno, 15 dollar martinis and packing the attendees into a small venue – great if you’re into that sort of thing.

Drinkup is the exact opposite! Its a meetup with no purpose or agenda other than to just hangout, have a beer, relax and maybe talk a little shop or snap a few pictures.
