#influenceSD–why didn’t I think of that?

At what point does a new industry need an awards event to unite its movers and shakers and celebrate their achievements? In the case of new media in San Diego, the answer is clearly right now!

#influenceSD, cofounded by locals Matt Browne and Melani Gordon, basically fills a gaping void in the local social media community.

With more than 3,000 votes cast online for over 315 nominees, it also seems to me like there’s been a pent up demand–has me kinda wondering, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Brief Updates from MBHQ

You’ve no doubt by now noticed that the sites got a bit of a re-design and some things got changed around last week. We wanted to highlight two changes to make sure everyone knows what changed.

The first and biggest is COMMENTS! Registration is no longer required to post a comment on any post. Of course if you already have an account you can still login to ensure your comments are attributed to you, but those who don’t can now post a comment without any long term commitment. Also, on the right you can see some of the recent comments so you’ll always know what the active discussions are. This was the most requested thing we’ve heard from people since our last redesign and we’re excited to see where it leads.

The next change is also something that was heavily requested, and that is a change to the ADS on the sites. You’ll immediately notice fewer of them, but what might not be as obvious is those smaller square ones to the right are specific to this city only and are being sold for a flat rate for a period of time rather than a confusing CPM/traffic/network model. Depending on the city, these range from $7-$175 for a full week. If you purchase one, during that time your ad will be the only one in that spot and will show on every page. We set these up both to make it easier for smaller local businesses to get their ads on our site, and also to help us bring in ads that relate better to our local audiences. Also, keeping these sites online is expensive and every little bit helps.

There are a bunch of other things we changed but we’ll leave those to you to investigate and take advantage of. Hope you like it, and we look forward to seeing you in the comments!!

Love,
The folks at MBHQ

In ur timeline, posting ur newz

Metblogs recently extended its reach into its 57th city and the consciousness of San Diegans. Now San Diego Metblogs will be even easier to follow, as it has its own Twitter feed!

Are you in San Diego and have a Twitter account? Or maybe just miss San Diego and its perfect weather? (Yes, that’s a dig at you, East Coast.) Want to read local blog posts from 14 of the finest bloggers (more added every day) in America’s Finest City? Then just start following @SDMetblogs, my friend.

We’ll serve up local happenings, quirky observations, bargains, and fun things to do with a decidedly San Diego flavor. You know, like a fish taco. Okay, and some crazy-old-man-next-door-style rants. You know it will happen. Either way, you’ll get a tweet sent to your mobile phone or computer whenever there’s a new post to read.

So no more hanging around my front door demanding more blog posts, okay? Follow @SDMetblogs instead, and get offa my lawn!

Now is the time of year when most of us start thinking about the summer months (which in San Diego is most of the year).  Unfortunately this year, now is also the time that many of us are letting our gym memberships go due to tough times and prudent frugality.  Who’s got disposable income for the fitness center right now?  Fortunately for San Diegans, the city has got you covered.  For the next couple of weeks I’m going to reveal all the good local free fitness spots I know of around the downtown and surrounding areas.

San Diego is a giant place!

Whenever I hear anybody talk about San Diego the only thing I ever hear about is downtown. Its interesting to me that the people who choose to visit our city mostly end up in the gaslamp quarter. I thought it would be wise to illustrate how easy it is to find awesome places to hangout, eat and enjoy ones self in San Diego when one doesn’t find themselves downtown.

Taa-daa! San Diego’s metblog is live!

San Diego is the second-largest city in California, and a techie magnet by any standards – often nicknamed Silicon Beach. So I was amazed to see that our fair city was not represented with a metroblog here. How could that be? If local bloggers were snakes – ouch, another one just bit me.

“Well, no one from your town has stepped up,” said Sean Bonner. Oh, well, if THAT’S all it takes…by evening’s end, 13 SD bloggers had volunteered.

I just started a movie blog of my own (http://www.thepegisin.com) about a month ago, so I did hear some snarky comments about how ironic it was that the n00b would get this thing going. But you know, I think blogging is a lot like being a clerk at Tower Records. Show up 3 days in a row, and they make you a supervisor.

Expect this space to bring you quirky, offbeat observations by San Diego blogerati, as well as alerts about upcoming San Diego events, mostly likely about beer, noms, movies, music, art, photography, social media, and probably more beer. Bonfires. Tweetups. Stuff like that.

Want to be an author? You must live in San Diego, and you should probably contact me soon, as I hear they will cap that list at about 20. Read these guidelines, then email me at thepegisin@cox.net.
