It’s Not Too Early to Think About ComicCon 2009

It’s getting to be that time of year and the San Diego Comic Convention is just around the corner.

This year’s con is July 23-26, and will mark the 40th anniversary of the convention and my 16th year in attendance.  Even before I lived in San Diego, I made the annual pilgrimage to San Diego and it has definitely been one of the things I look most forward to every year.  For me, the Con is a like Holiday observed with great fanfare, celebration, and best shared with friends (and sometimes beer).

I case you haven’t already, I would highly suggest you Pre-Register for your passes  now as last year’s pre-registration passes sold out weeks before the event.  Even though it is a tradition of our people (it is the proud tribe of geeks that I speak of, of whom @wilw is one of our many heroes) to wait in long lines for things like conventions, movies, or small plastic bobbles known as swag, don’t be one of the many who were turned away last year after waiting hours in the swelter of the San Diego Summer.

Now if you’re interested in seeing a completely different side of the event, or just want a way to save your money for things like rare books or toys, the Volunteer Pre-Registeration has also opened.  Volunteering is perhaps one of the best ways to see the show, and the best part is you get in for free after putting in just a little bit of work.

In the 15 years I’ve been going to the con, I have volunteered twice and had a blast both times – once even having the fortune of working the green room where I was able to meet Mark Hamil, Bruce Timm, and Paul Dini all on the same shift.  Even if you don’t spot your heroes, it’s still a blast as you’ll get to meet some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable comic book fans in the nation.  It’s not always glamorous or easy, but it’s an experience you’ll always remember.
